“Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. Some people God has designated in the church to be, first, apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers; then, mighty deeds; then gifts of healing, assistance, administration, and varieties of tongues.” With these words, St. Paul in his first Letter to the Corinthians, chapter 12, verse 12 to 30 reminds us of our call to discipleship and the need to use our talents and gifts for the greater glory of God.

In our gospel reading today from the beginning of the holy Gospel according to Luke, chapter 1, verse 1 to 4; and chapter 4, verse 14 to 21, we see how Jesus put to good use His gift from God as He taught in the temple and touched the lives of many through His teachings.

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, what gifts have you been blessed with by God? Have you recognized these gifts and talents you have been blessed with? Are you putting these gifts and talents from God to good use like Jesus in today’s gospel reading, or are these gifts given to you, wasting or rotting away? Where are you using these gifts and talents at the moment and where are your gifts and talents most useful? How are you using those gifts and talents, are you using them for the greater glory of God or for your own glory and praise?

Today my dear friends, we are reminded by St. Paul in our Second Reading of how blessed we are as God’s children; and of these blessings or gifts or talents God has given us. So let us follow the example of Jesus in today’s Gospel Reading and go into the world to put those gifts, talents, abilities and blessings we have received from God to good use for the greater glory of His Holy Name.
