In today’s gospel reading we hear the story of the call to discipleship of Andrew, and his brother Simon Peter. As we begin the Season of Ordinary Time, today’s gospel reading reminds us of our call to be faithful disciples of Christ. It also gives us pointers on the best way to follow Christ as we answer our call to discipleship. So how can we better answer our call to discipleship? The actions of Andrew in the gospel reading shows us some characteristics of true discipleship. These are:

  1. Seeking the Lord - Like the two disciples who heard what John the Baptist said and immediately followed Jesus, we are called to continually search for God, desire Him and make Him be part of our lives.
  2. Openness to God - Let us be open to encountering God in our daily lives like the two disciples who were open to going home with Jesus, and when they saw where He was staying, stayed with Him that day.
  3. Listening to God - Just like the two disciples who listened to Jesus, when He said, “Come, and you will see.” and followed Him. And just like Samuel who responded “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening,” let us listen to the Lord and follow His ways.

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, as we begin this season of Ordinary Time, let us follow the examples of the disciples in today’s gospel reading as we answer our call to discipleship by constantly following Christ, by sincerely being open to Him, and by consistently listening to Him.
