16th March – Blessed John Amias
The Church of Christ has been founded by shedding its own blood, not that of others; by enduring outrage, not by inflicting it. Persecutions have made it grow; martyrdoms have crowned it - Saint Jerome
Blessed John Amias was born in England and married near Wakefield where he became a cloth dealer. When his wife died, he went to Reims and was ordained a priest in 1581. He returned to England, and worked there until he was arrested by English authorities. He was hanged, drawn, and quartered at York with Blessed Robert Dalby, then beatified by Pope Pius XI in 1929.
