10th Sunday of Ordinary Time, Year B
And looking around at those seated in the circle he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.” With this comment of Jesus in today’s gospel reading, Jesus tells us what it really means for one to be His disciple. For one to be a disciple of Christ, the person has to do the will of God. First of all, what is the will of God?
Jesus in the gospel of Saint John, chapter 6, verse 40 explains what the will of God is. According to Jesus, “the will of my Father, is that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him [on] the last day.” So for one to be a member of Christ’s family and His disciple, he or she has to do the will of God by believing in Him. If doing the will of God means believing in Him, we need to ask ourselves these questions. Am I doing the will of God? Do I believe in Him? If I truly believe in Him, how strong is this belief in God? And how can I deepen my belief in Him?
Since we know that doing the will of God means believing in Him, how then can we better believe in Him? If belief is an acceptance that a statement is true or that something exists or if belief is confidence in someone or something, doing the will of God entails having faith in Him, trusting in Him, and being obedient to Him.
My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, do we truly and sincerely believe in God? Do we really have faith in Him? Do we trust in Him and are we obedient to Him? Let us do the will of God today by truly believing in Him which entails having faith in Him, trusting in Him, and being obedient to Him.
